Under the auspices of the UNHCR, the United Nations refugee unit, Ireland agreed to take in some Vietnamese refugees. The refugees has escaped the horrors of war by taking to sea in anything that floated, (they became known as the boat people), many lost their lives when unsuitable craft sank. Ireland's reception centre for the refugees was based in the grounds of Blanchardstown Hospital and was used as a temporary base until suitable accomodation was arranged.
Image shows preparations being made at Blanchardstown Hospital for the imminent arrival of the families. Picture shows matresses and beds being delivered.
