Thomas Spencer Wells (1818-1897) English surgeon, born at St Albans, Hertfordshire. Served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy (1841-1853) before practicising in London. He specialised in obstetric and ophthalmic surgery. Made early use of anaesthetics in surgery. Performed his first successful ovariotomy in 1858. Cartoon by Edward Linley Sambourne in the Punch's Fancy Portraits series from 'Punch' (London, 19 May 1883).
