Joseph Black (1728-1799) Scottish chemist, born in Bordeaux, France, son of a wine merchant. Professor chemistry at Glasgow University. In 1757 he isolated carbon dioxide. Evolved the theory of latent heat. Engraving from 'A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen' by Thomas Thomson (1870).
