Torso of an Amazon. Five bronze statues of defeated Amazons had been made by famous Greek artists for the sanctuary of Artemis at Ephestas. According to the legend the Amazons returned to Ephesus which they had founded on their way to war with Athens. This Amazon was leaning against a pillar, her right arm on her head, a deep would on her right side. Reins serve her as a belt, she may be the Amazon queen Hippolyte who had lost her famous belt to a Greek opponent.
