Charles Burney (1726-1814) English musicologist, born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Studied in London under Dr Arne. Travelled in Europe in 1770-1772, collecting material for his 'General History of Music' (1776-1789). Father of the novelist and diarist Fanny (Frances) Burney, Madame D'Arblay.
