Titus Oates (1649-1705) interrogated by the King's Council, 28 September 1678. Oates was the inventor of the Popish Plot, a supposed Roman Catholic conspiracy to kill Charles II. On his false evidence up to 15 people were executed and many other imprisoned under suspicion. Engraving.
