Eric Gill 1882-1940 Mankind 1927-8 Trained as a letter cutter and stone mason, Gill received no formal academic art education. Although he later took on many assistants to help in his busy workshop, Gill retained his belief in the purity and sacred nature of materials. He lived in the manner of a medieval craftsman, setting up artists' guilds wherever he was based.
