Betel holder, Batavia (now Jakarta), c.1700-1725, silver. Betel was a widespread stimulant chewed in Asia, one also used by Europeans. Offering a betel chewing quid to others was an integral part of social occasions. Magnificent boxes and silver receptacles were made in which to preserve the ingredients - including betel leaves - for rolling a quid.
