Louis (Ludwig) Spohr (1784-1859). Oil on Canvas, artist unknown. Spohr was a German composer, violinist and conductor, with an innovative streak. He was one of the pioneers of conducting with a baton and also invented the violin chinrest. Despite a prolific output, he fell into relative obscurity after his death. In this portrait Spohr is shown penning what appears to be the music for 'God save the King' In his late teens Spohr was sponsored by the Duke of Brunswick and the same melody was used by Brunswick for its own national anthem 'Heil unserm Herzof, Heil!' The Duke was married to Augusta, sister of George III.
