Gold lime flasks (poporos) Quimbaya culture, Colombia AD 600-1100 These figures are in fact flasks, made to hold lime made from seashells. A small stick was inserted in the top to remove thelime, which was taken with coca leaves as a stimulant to aid clear thinking. The figures hold spiral motifs which may indicate sprouting vegetation and suggests that they were used in fertility rituals.
