Mazeppa, Byron's poem published 1819, based on passage in Voltaire's 'Charles XII'. Mazeppa, discovered in intrigue, is stripped and bound to a wild Ukrainian horse which was lashed into madness. It galloped until it reached plains of Ukraine and there dropped dead. Mazeppa, near death, was rescued by Cossacks.
