Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689) English physician born at Wynford Eagle, Dorset. In his medical practice he separated Scarlatina from Measles, popularised the use of Jesuit's Bark (Cinchona) in the treatment of fevers, and revived the Hippocratic practice of observation. Engraving by Abraham Blooteling (1634-1698) after the portrait by Mary Beale (1632-1597) a pupil of Lely.
