Male Torso. The representation of the naked male body was a very popular theme in Greek sculpture. During the 6th and the early 5th century BC naked male figures meant to be portraits, were erected on the tombs of young men of noble descent. In sanctuaries the same type of statue represented humans, heroes or gods. Greek, 1st quarter of the 5th century BC. Probably from the island of Paros.
