The Army Reserve Brigade, which is made up of regular units from the Southern Command, are conducting a series of conventional military exercises in counties Mayo and Sligo from the 5th to the 9th September. Approximately 1,500 men and 250 vehicles are involved. The exercise was codenamed "Humbert" after an ill fated expedition by French troops into Ireland on 23rd August 1798. 1,100 French troops with Irish support took on the incumbent English forces. After some initial success they were defeated at Ballinamuk on 8th Sept 1798 by the army of Cornwallis.
Troops from the 4th Infantry Batallion take up defensive positions to combat any counter attack.
