The Wear Above Sunderland Iron Bridge, c1829. The Wear was an important waterway for the export of the coal, chemical and industrial products of the area. On the right are warehouses and staithes, while on the left are the tops of the masts of vessels which could be loading up at coal staithes. Engraving after William Westall (1781-1850), British painter and printmaker.
