James Prescott Joule's (1818-89) apparatus for determining mechanical equivalent of heat. Vessel of water, oil or mercury encloses vanes attached to spindle. Cord wound round cylinder and drum. Weight descending against scale rotates spindle and vanes. Raising and lowering weight raises temperature of fluid. From rise in temperature and distance travelled energy used can be calculated.
