Antonio Amati (1543-1617) and Girolamo Amati (1561-1630). Five-Stringed Cello, Cremona c. 1605. This magnificent cello is the only surviving example of a classical Italian instrument of its type. It is characterized by its wide, squat middle section. The relatively flat front arch contrasts with the fuller contours of the back.
