Philip Snowden, lst Viscount Snowden (1864-1937), English politician born at Cowling in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Entered Parliament in 1908 but lost his seat in 1918. Re-elected in 1922, in Ramsay Macdonald's 1924 administration he became the first Labour (socialist) Chancellor of the Exchequer. Created Viscount Snowden in 1931. From a series of cards on 'Notable MPs' (London, 1929).
