The Official Image of Elizabeth 1. Queen Elizabeth commissioned a new Great Seal in 1584. This drawing by Nicholas Hilliard (possibly 1547 - died London 1619) may be one of the designs for the new seal. Design probably 1585. Pen and ink on vellum. The seal was used to authorise important documents.
