William Black (1841-1898) Scottish novelist born at Glasgow. He began his working life as a journalist but from 1875 he devoted himself entirely to fiction. The author of some 30 novels popular at the time. Cartoon by Edward Linley Sambourne in the Punch's Fancy Portraits series from 'Punch' (London, 26 March 1881).
