17th March 2012:
Dublin City went even greener today for St. Patrick’s Festival 2012! Building on the success of last year’s ‘Greening The City’, Festival organisers once again asked all businesses and venues to turn their lights green to create a city-wide illumination for the duration of the Festival weekend (16th-19th March). The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Andrew Montague, kicked off proceedings by turning the GPO green on Friday evening, 16th March. Other landmark buildings including College Green, Christ Church Cathedral and Trinity College also turned green in celebration of our National Festival.
“St. Patrick’s Festival is a great opportunity to showcase Dublin city and we want to encourage as many businesses as possible to participate,” says CEO Susan Kirby. “Research conducted showed that the Festival provides an estimated return of €50.5 million to the economy, making it one of the most important events of the year for a lot of businesses. It’s a great time to join together and make a real impact. We’ve had a lot of renewed interest in the initiative with many new businesses getting involved this year. ‘Greening The City’ will also take to the waterways of Dublin with The Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship and Famine Museum set to be greened for the Festival weekend. We are looking forward to seeing the city illuminated in celebration of the national Festival.” she added.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Andrew Montague says “St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration of all things Irish and one of the ways we can show our pride in being Irish is to Green the City. I am calling on businesses to light their buildings green for the four day festival. My residence, the Mansion House will be green and Dublin City Council will be lighting up City Hall and Civic Offices as will other major buildings in Dublin to show Dublin and the world how proud we are of our national day”.
