The Reformation - Charles V Shortly before 1550 a combination of circumstances united all seventeen provinces of the Netherlands under Charles V, a Netherlander by birth, who was also German emperor and King of Spain. A great number of Netherlanders perished for the reformed faith during his reign. In 1555 he resigned his power in favour of his son Philip II.
