Robert Dudley b1534. English nobleman, illegitimate son of the 1st Earl of Essex by Lady Sheffield. After studying at Christ Church, Oxford, he made a voyage to the West Indies (1594-95), was knighted by Essex on the Cadiz expedition (1596). He turned Roman Catholic and lived chiefly near Florence, busy with naval inventions. In 1620 the Emperor Ferdinand III created him Duke of Northumberland and Earl of Warwick in the Holy Roman Empire.
