George Birkbeck (1776-1841) English Quaker physician, philanthropist and pioneer of adult education, born at Settle, Yorkshire, who settled in London in 1804. A founder of the Mechanics' Institute Movement. The London Mechanics' Institute (1823) became Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution (1866) and Birkbeck College (1907). In 1920 it became part of the University of London. Engraving, 1869.
